Facebook told Mashablein an emailed statement that the two sites offer "hundreds of thousands of house and apartment rentals" that users can browse. Sellers can also upload photos of their properties directly to Facebook.
The company hopes that Marketplace will allow users to more efficiently perform transactions they've already been using the platform for.
Groups such as "New York City Housing" and "Boston Housing," where sellers post pictures and connect with interested tenants, have hundreds of thousands of members, and see hundreds of posts a day. Now, users searching for rentals can find them in one place, and can filter the results.
The initial rollout includes custom filters for location, price, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, rental type, square footage, and pet friendliness. Renters can also upload 360 photos of their properties.
Facebook did not comment on whether Marketplace will feature more rental services in the future.
This update is part of the company's growing efforts to monopolize user buying and selling by aggregating listings within Marketplace.
In October, Facebook partnered with Edmunds, Cars.com, Auction123, CDK Global, Socialdealer, and Kelley Blue Book to allow users to browse vehicles and check prices on Marketplace. Facebook also plans to enable users to talk directly with car dealers via Messenger.
The social network also began allowing employers to post job openings on their business pages earlier this year. Facebook plans to allow event tickets and retail goods in the future, too.
Currently, the apartment rental feature is only available to users in the U.S., and Facebook has not specified when it will be available in other countries. A Facebook spokesperson told Mashable that search volume in Marketplace has tripled since the beginning of 2017.
They also said that Facebook plans to continue the expansion. "Marketplace will continue to explore a variety of new opportunities to partner with businesses, in addition to optimizing the consumer-to-consumer product experience," the spokesperson told Mashable.
Future updates to the service will be determined by how the service is used and searched. For now, at least we have another option beyond Craigslist when searching for good apartments.
