The meme began with Twitter user @DIXIENORMOUS, who started tweeting Photoshopped images of a Parisian SpongeBob on Friday. Soon after, user @afadisborn tweeted a thread of SpongeBob "traveling the world in drag," featuring such gems as drunk Cleopatra SpongeBob, Spanish SpongeBob, and "Lady Bird Going to New York" SpongeBob.

They even included a multi-SpongeBob performance of "It's A Small World," the Disney World song famous for terrifying multiple generations of young children.

The meme really snowballed from there -- at this point, it's moved firmly into "niche fandom" territory. Now we have Nicki Minaj SpongeBob, Overconfident Cook SpongeBob, a SpongeBob who listened to My Chemical Romance one time, a college SpongeBob who just discovered leftist politics, and severalLana del Rey SpongeBobs (to name a few).
Frankly, things have gotten out of hand.

The original pic -- SpongeBob wearing a purple dress and bag -- is a screencap from the Season 1 SpongeBob episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy." (He's trying to tempt Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy out of retirement by pretending to get robbed.) You might also recognize it from another meme: "when you're all dressed up and your friends cancel."
Honestly, we'll probably see this particular SpongeBob in another meme within the year. Why wouldn't we? The dress, the purse, the statement lip! It's all so perfect.
