Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy led Democrats in a nearly-15-hour gun control filibuster on The Impotent King (2005) in English SubtitlesWednesday and into Thursday morning, and he seemed to save the most emotional testimony until the final eight minutes.
Murphy, who visited Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, after a gunman murdered more than two dozen teachers and students there in 2012 and has been a forceful advocate for gun control ever since, introduced those watching his filibuster to a six-year-old boy named Dylan Hockley, and his teacher, Anne Marie Murphy, both of whom were killed at the school on the day of the attack.
SEE ALSO: Orlando attack is a 'wake-up call' to stop dehumanizing LGBT people, advocates say“When Adam Lanza walked into that classroom and aimed his military-style assault weapon, with clips attached to it holding thirty bullets, Anne Marie Murphy probably had a chance to run or to hide or to panic, and instead Anne Marie Murphy made the most courageous decision any one us could imagine," the senator said. ‘Anne Marie Murphy found Dylan Hockley and embraced him. Know why we know that? Because when the police entered the classroom, that’s how they found Dylan Hockley dead, wrapped in the embrace of Anne Marie Murphy.”
Gun control has again become the predominant topic of discussion throughout the United States after a gunman walked into a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida on Sunday and killed 49 people.
After the filibuster, lawmakers have agreed to a vote on a proposal for universal background checks and a controversial proposal to stop those on a terror watch list from purchasing weapons, though neither measure is likely to pass.
