The bill, which already survived a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives, now has one more legislative hurdle to clear -- reconciliation talks to bring the House and Senate versions in line, followed by another vote -- before it can be signed into law.

Between the controversial bill itself, the numerous last-minute amendments added to appease different GOP interests, the hasty and one-sided process that brought it together, and the dead-of-night approval, it's clear that some not-small portion of the American public is feeling betrayed by their elected officials this morning.
