LOS ANGELES -- The videos about sexrumors were true.
Lucasfilm has officially announced that Donald Glover will play Lando Calrissian in the standalone Han Solo movie that will star Alden Ehrenreich.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing the movie, which will depict Lando in his formative years as a scoundrel on the rise in the galaxy’s underworld — years before the events involving Han, Leia, and Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and his rise to Rebel hero in Return of the Jedi.
“We’re so lucky to have an artist as talented as Donald join us,” said Lord and Miller. “These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations. Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”
Best known for starring on Community, Glover also created and stars in the critically acclaimed FX series Atlanta. Glover is also a Grammy-nominated musician who performs under the name Childish Gambino.
Glover will soon be seen in an undisclosed role in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
In a fun coincidence, Glover and I have a history as we both went to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, where we were in the dramatic writing program together. It has been surreal to watch his rise from his humble beginnings in Derrick Comedy to a writer on 30 Rockto an actor on Community, and now beyond.
We ran into each other at HBO's Emmy party last month and he couldn't have been more gracious. It goes to show how you never know which of your peers is destined for super-stardom. I remember Donald way back when and I couldn't be more proud of him, not just because what he has accomplished as a writer and a musician, but how he is taking over Hollywood between Spider-Manand now, Han Solo, where his casting as Lando couldn't be more perfect.
The Force is strong with this one.
The Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Anthology Film is due in well more than 12 parsecs on May 25, 2018.
