Buzzfeed notes that this trend started on Chinese video-sharing app Kwai, where the hashtag #吃冰 (which is pronounced "chi bing" and means "eat ice") had thousands of posts.
A lot of the ice eating Instagram posts were originally Kwai videos. These posts are racking up thousands of views and likes.
