The Martial arts ArchivesMandalorianChapter 6, titled "The Prisoner," starts off like most of the other episodes of the show, but about halfway through it takes a pretty dramatic turn as Mando really leans in to the "hunter" part of "bounty hunter."
The Mandalorian, in his never-ending quest for work in the galactic gig economy, teamed up with a dastardly crew with ties to his past for one big (and difficult) job. There's a Twi'lek who seems to be attracted to Mando, a devil-looking Devaronian with an attitude problem, a guy named Mayfield played by Bill Burr, and an egotistical droid.
It's a classic setup, but the way it all pans out isn't exactly typical.
While they were all supposed to be on the same side, things don't exactly run smoothly for the group, especially when Mando learns they're breaking a prisoner out of a New Republic prison ship and Mayfield commits the cardinal sin of messing around with baby Yoda. Despicable.
After a bumpy arrival and some straight up disrespect from the Mandalorian's new colleagues, the plot starts to heat up as the crew enter the ship. Things immediately go south when Burg the devil guy shoots a tiny droid and alerts the ship's robotic guards. What ensues is yet another fantastic tussle with the Mandalorian as he single-handedly takes down the robots.
As the team makes their way through the ship, they come upon a human guard who Mando does not want to harm, but the others don't have his moral compass, and the Twi'lek Xi'an goes lethal. Then they arrive at the prison cell they were looking for and the crew betrays Mando, locking him in the cell in exchange for Xi'an's brother, who is clearly evil.
But Mando isn't like other people, and he escapes pretty quickly with a little ingenuity. Then the hunt was on.
While the crew entered the prison ship as (reluctant) allies, they would not be leaving as such. The Mandalorian channeled his inner Xenomorph and turned this New Republic prison ship into a horror movie, making the lights go all red and blinky, closing doors in the faces of the gang, and sneaking up on them for devastating attacks.
Thus far, this scenario is one of my favorites from the series. It was unexpected and delightfully cathartic to see Mando turn into a spooky, silent killer. The guy will only let you mess with him so much before he teaches you the important lesson that he is better than you in every way imaginable.
SEE ALSO: Baby Yoda is Mashable's Being of the DecadeThe ending of the episode had a nice twist as well as Mando pulled away from the space station he received the job from, leaving the New Republic distress signal behind and turning the whole base into an easy target for a group of X Wing pilots.
Unfortunately, Chapter 6 of The Mandaloriandidn't address the cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 5 and we still don't know for sure who appeared on Tatooine after Mando got out of there. Maybe next time...
