They play Troy and Rose Maxson, a married couple living with Troy's brother and two sons (one by Rose and one from a previous marriage). In this short scene, from the very beginning of the story, Troy describes meeting Rose for the first time, all those years ago.

"I told him if he wasn't the marrying kind then move out the way so the marrying kind can find me," Rose says with Davis' finely tuned mix of sincerity and humor.
In August Wilson’s original play, Troy faces an internal conflict over his son Cory pursuing a career as an athlete -- something that Troy himself dreamed of but was unable to achieve due to systemic racism in the MLB. The resultant tension ripples through the family, including Rose.
