VANCOUVER,My Mothers Friend 5 British Columbia -- Supernaturalhas been on air for 11 years, and in that time, the Winchester brothers have fought everything from ghosts and vampires to shapeshifting gods that look like Paris Hilton and Lucifer himself.
This week, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) are tackling Hitler -- and not for the first time. Following a Season 8 episode (aptly titled "Everybody Hates Hitler"), the Nov. 10 episode, "The One You've Been Waiting For," sees the brothers facing off with the Thule Society, a group of Nazi-supporting necromancers who are attempting to resurrect the Führer.
SEE ALSO: 'Frequency' gets a visit from a 'Supernatural' favorite"We find out that the Thule may have been in possession of a cursed object of sorts that might have a bit of Hitler's soul. And they're trying to do a Jurassic Parkand take the [DNA out of the] amber," Padalecki told reporters on set in Vancouver last week. "And so obviously we don't know how it's going and so we have to go back and track the Thule and figure out if, in fact, they have succeeded."
Hitler's original vessel may have been destroyed, but fans can still look forward to seeing the show tackle the dictator, according to Padalecki, who joked, "It's fun to see the Supernaturaltake on what Hitler was really like behind the camera."
The Winchesters have more than just the Third Reich to contend with: Lucifer (Rick Springfield) is still on the loose, and the British arm of the Men of Letters have sent a mysterious assassin known as Mr. Ketch to clean up after their hunts.
"It’s interesting," Ackles said of the rival Men of Letters and their tough love approach. "We’re going to see that storyline get fleshed out in the second half of the season. There’s gonna be some recruitment attempts, some disagreements about methods of hunting, and that will certainly boil to a point. But as of right now, they are trying to include us by showing that they have a superior method of dealing with these things than we do, and they’re trying to get us on board with that. But I think we’ll find out in the future that maybe their methods aren’t the best way."
Padalecki agreed, "For me it’s reminiscent of Season 6 when Sam was soulless and behaved much the same way the British Men of Letters are behaving now, at least in their hunting tactics ... It’s fun to revisit that – would you kill two people to save three, would you kill ten to save twelve? You’re still killing ten people. Would you try to find the middle ground? Would you try to find the grey area, not the black and white?"
Last week's episode saw Dean struggling to reconcile himself with the fact that the boys' recently resurrected mother, Mary (Samantha Smith), chose to leave her sons and get some space while she tried to adjust to being brought back from the dead.
"It's unique because she's their mother, but she's also kind of a stranger," Ackles explained. "Obviously the brothers are strangers to her as well, which is why you see this struggle to find their footing in the relationship because it is a forced situation. And at least from Dean's perspective, he doesn't really know how to fit. He doesn't know how to categorize the relationship. It's an awkward thing, which I think lends itself to good story."
